13 general comments about the Fed:
NO POLITICICAL OPINIONS EXPRESSED
- We mostly like an independent Fed.
- The Constitution doesn’t mention independent agencies anywhere.
- We mostly want presidents to stay “hands off” of the Fed for a bunch of good reasons.
- Power corrupts.
- Sunlight is the best disinfectant.
- Govt waste, fraud and abuse are a huge problem, not just fiscally but culturally.
- “Independence” does not mean “unaccountable”. Fed officials have neither diplomatic immunity nor titles of nobility.
- I have no sense of who’s right in the specific issues of the day.
- The mere appearance of conflict of interest erodes trust.
- “Trust but verify” is generally a better approach than “Nothing to see here, move along”.
- It’s hard to maintain independence without pushing back to some degree.
- It’s almost impossible to separate political preferences and other “priors” from the analysis of any issue/event involving stakeholders that have been politicized, rightly or wrongly.
- This whole thing reminds me of A Few Good Men. The mere act of investigating whether someone ordered a “code red” is out of bounds… Unless the allegations are proven.
- I am NOT taking a side. Pretty much everyone agrees with all 13 points above. (At least they did a week ago.)
Before you respond to anything on this list, I’m going to jetpack away.
